Tummy Protection is KEY when using Rx NSAIDs to help control nausea and possibly ulcers, there is no guarantee even with all these your pup won't get an ulcer while on NSAIDs so please monitor symptoms closely!
The following are examples of the main probiotics/tummy protectants members have used with success
NOTE: Probiotics alone ARE NOT ENOUGH to protect the tummy!!
- Probiotics (these have been recommended by vets)
- Visbiome – order from company because it has to be protected from heat
- Proviable – can get from Amazon, Chewy, etc
- RxBiotic – can get from Amazon but make sure store is H3 (they ship from Rx Vitamins warehouse)
- Saccharomyces Boulardii probiotic – The two I know of are Four Leaf Rover or AnimalBiome/Dogs. USE this to help control diarrhea and also to help protect the Gastric MicroBiome during antibiotics, especially the antibiotic Metronidazole. It can be used along with your other probiotics since most probiotics do not include s. boulardii
- Tummy Protectors
- Omeprazole (Prilosec) – antacid – Dr Hale (TCVM Vet) doesn’t like this one because she said it slows digestion (which could cause constipation) if it works for your pup consider adding digestive enzymes and fennel seed tea which help with digestion.
- Alimend K9 – can get from Amazon, Chewy, etc
- Sucralfate – in Europe can get over the counter
- Misoprostol – prescription needed
- Bao-He-Wan - can be used in place of Omeprazole
- GastroElm works great but you MUST administer at least 3-4 hours before and/or after Rx meds and supplements as it will block absorption of these and make them less effective!!
- Slippery Elm syrup also works but again you MUST administer at least 3-4 hours before and/or after Rx meds and supplements as it will block absorption of these and make them less effective!!
- Foods that can be added to help the tummy
- Goats milk kefir – has natural probiotics but not enough to use alone
- Cottage cheese – also good for tummy but again not enough to use alone
- Gut Gummies, pill pockets and herb “balls”
- Foods that will protect that tummy 🥦🥬
- Add puréed raw cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, celery, kale, etc to their food each meal and it will help support their tummy mucous membranes!!! And as a bonus asparagus and celery help support the kidneys and urinary tract system.
- BTW don’t forget the cranberries…so important to help prevent UTIs!!
- S-methylmethionine is a vitamin-like derivative of the amino acid methionine, famously found in raw cabbage and cruciferous vegetables. Used historically to support gastrointestinal health and ulcer healing, it is not a true vitamin but acts to support stomach mucous membranes. It is commonly consumed via raw nbroccoli, and asparagus to aid digestion
- Key Benefits of S-methylmethionine:
- Gastrointestinal Health: Often used to treat stomach ulcers and repair mucous membranes by affecting secretory function.
- Nutrient Source: Found naturally in leafy greens, turnips, and celery
- Food Sources: Raw cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale Asparagus, parsley, Celery, beets, Milk and egg yolks
- B5 and SAMe
- Additional tummy protection from NSAIDs…but always continue to monitor and do blood tests for liver/kidney
- B5 supplement…Daisy is going to get 145 mg (45 from her B Complex and an additional 100 mg from a standalone B5). She’s approx 50 lbs
- SAMe - she’s going to get 200 mg …there are SAMe supplements made for dogs so it should be easy to find the right dose for your boy, and a bonus is SAMe helps support the liver!
- Here’s what Gold Standard Herbs Integrated Vets said about B5 plus SAMe (I wanted to make sure they didn’t interfere with Adoptrex and Halscion)…and the reason they should help while taking NSAIDs is the common mucus barrier that Chronic Enteropathy and protection from NSAIDs need 🙏💙
- What B5 and SAMe Do
- B5 (Pantothenic Acid) is a precursor to Coenzyme A, which is involved in energy production and fatty acid metabolism. In the context of chronic enteropathy, it may help support the metabolic demands of healing intestinal tissue and maintaining the mucosal barrier.
- SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine) is a methyl donor involved in numerous biochemical reactions, including supporting liver function, reducing inflammation, and helping maintain the integrity of cell membranes. It's often used to support liver health and has some anti-inflammatory properties.
- Neither of these would be expected to interfere with the herbal actions of Adoptrex or Halscion. If anything, they might complement the healing process by supporting the metabolic side of tissue repair while the herbs address the inflammatory and motility issues.
- You should be fine to continue Adoptrex and/or Halscion while Daisy Jane participates in Dr. Buono's research study with B5 and SAMe. There's no reason to expect any negative interactions. The herbs are addressing the underlying pattern (inflammation, motility, Damp Heat), while the B5 and SAMe are supporting metabolic processes that help the gut heal
- NOTE: Although these may help tummy problems, they WILL NOT PROTECT the other organs that NSAIDS may damage: kidneys, liver, etc so blood work and xrays/ultrasound are key !!! READ THE FIRST SECTION ON NSAIDS if you haven’t already!!!
